Shin Gozilla - Gozilla Resurgence

Sorry, if you're not Japanese, you may not be able to enjoy half of this movie.

To those Western countries, terrorism is probably the most terrifying incident. But to us Japanese, it's an earthquake. In "Shin Gozilla," the government officials call Gozilla "pest", not a monster or an alien. This means Gozilla in this movie is a natural disaster just like an earthquake. He doesn't attack cities or people. But he unintentionally destroys cities while he moves just like typhoons or quakes. He may not be a bad guy, but if people's lives are at stake, you have to do something. In this case, it's pest control. In terms of pest control, there's no such thing as "greater good." So they stopped launching missiles when they found one guy piggybacking an old lady in their targeted area.

This is just one example that shows in this movie, every factor has its reasoning and leads to various consequences, which is hard to understand if you are not Japanese.

And this movie implies tragedy of Tohoku Earthquake, but it's not necessarily criticizing Japanese government's slow reaction. It tells it may take a bit longer to come to conclusion, but we do best to bring out the best solution for longer term. And the message to us is just like Akasaka said in the end of the movie, "We will be OK, as we rebuilt this country from scratch many times in the past."

Original title: シン・ゴジラ (2016, Japan)
